Public Safety Alert: Distraction Thefts

Please note, we have had reports of numerous Distraction Thefts in and around the Cloverdale Mall area. Distraction Thefts typically prey upon unsuspecting senior citizens and are often under-reported because victims can feel embarrassed. If you or someone you know has been a victim of a Distraction Theft, please contact the Police.

Distraction Thefts occur when a stranger (often a friendly woman) approaches a victim (often an unsuspecting senior citizen) to ask for directions or initiate a conversation. The stranger distracts the victim with worthless jewellery and uses slight-of-hand techniques to steal the victim’s own valuable jewellery and/or belongings. Victims usually don’t realize they’ve been robbed until the stranger has left in a waiting car.

While Police have made a number arrests in Distraction Thefts cases, the risk is still the same. For more information about Distraction Thefts, please watch the video above which was published by Toronto Crime Stoppers and 14 Division last summer.

If you have seen or heard anything suspicious, please contact the Police.
If you see a crime in progress, please call 9-1-1 immediately.
