Thieves Targeting Lexus and Toyota SUVs in GTA

Please note, York Regional Police are warning anyone who owns a Lexus or Toyota SUV that thieves are targeting these vehicles across the GTA.

Investigators with the York Regional Police Auto/Cargo Theft Unit are providing crime prevention tips after a series of thefts targeting specific vehicles.
  • Thieves are targeting Lexus RX 350, Lexus GX 460, Toyota 4Runner, and Toyota Highlander.
  • Over the past year, 81 of these vehicles have been stolen in York Region.
  • After the thieves gain access to the vehicle, they attach an electronic device to re-program the car's computer. This allows the vehicle to accept a key the thieves have brought with them.
  • The vehicles are in high demand overseas. After they are stolen, they are often put in shipping containers destined for North Africa.

Investigators are asking owners of these vehicles to consider the following safety tips:
  • If possible, park in a locked garage.
  • Place another vehicle behind your Lexus or Toyota; this barrier will discourage thieves from targeting your vehicle.
  • Use a steering-wheel lock.
  • Install a lock on your on-board data port.
  • Invest in an aftermarket GPS tracker.
  • Consider purchasing quality surveillance systems for your home, and ensure the cameras are functioning properly.
